Wooncoöperatie De Walvis

A home for caretakers of the OLVG-hospital

De Walvis is a housing cooperative determined to make affordable housing for healthcare workers of the OLVG-hospital. With 72 housing units, the building will offer necessary homes to those that take care of the city and its people, such as nurses, pharmacists, assistants and students in the hospital. Due to skyrocketing rent prices, these essential people are pushed further and further to the edges of the city, far away from their workplaces.

In de Walvis, a large mix of housing will be available: from compact one-bedroom apartments (35 m2) to larger family apartments (76 m2). 25% of the housing will be up for social rent, the other 75% will be middle income rent. Next to the 72 homes, spaces are allocated for shared facilities such as a sports room, a collective living room and kitchen, and a healthcare facility like a general practitioner, elderly care or a day care.

Each of the apartments will have bedrooms with additional acoustic insulation, so that healthcare workers can sleep soundly after a night shift. The variety of houses allows for families of all types: singles, couples, starting or larger families.

Currently, de Walvis is in its VO-phase. Together with the future inhabitants, workshops are held to discuss the look & feel of the building, the functions of the shared spaces and how they would like to live together. As the project progresses, the building will be further detailed along the wishes of the community.
