Wooncoöperatie Hommeldorp

The first pilot housing cooperative of Utrecht

'Hommeldorp' will be a housing community in Utrecht of around 40 homes. The housing cooperative will be build up of 'clusters' of four to eight houses that share facilities, such as a kitchen and/or living room. These clusters are the building blocks of the community, and guarantee connection between community members. The living goals of the cooperative are presented through five core values: sustainability, diversity, neighborhood integration, creativity and affordability.

Hommeldorp wants to offer sustainable, affordable and future-proof rental apartments for people that would like to actively participate in a community in Utrecht Leidsche Rijn. Their intrinsic motivation is fueled by their own perspectives as queer, neurodivergent and culturally diverse 'Utrechters'. Especially for minorities, the city is an important place to find community and acceptance. That is why they would like to reserve space for those for whom there is very little available and suitable living space, such as rainbow- and multiparent families.

Hommeldorp will be build up of various clusters to create a layered and social design. That's how the cooperative aims to create an inclusive, connected form of living together. In a building of roughly 50 inhabitants, these in-between spheres are important: in smallers groups it is easier to build connection and to feel ownership over one's shared spaces.

In january 2026, the municipality of Utrecht selected Hommeldorp for a free plot in Utrecht Leidsche Rijn. On this site, located on the Chisinaustraat, Hommeldorp will make a housing complex of 33 homes together with Time to Access. Four of those will be social rent, 23 middle-income rent and six will be in the upper segment, which will be independent. Hommeldorp is one of the last projects to be realized in Leidsche Rijn Centrum Oost.
